Chapter 4. Blocked

Selena’s heart was pounding in her chest, and it felt like a wild animal was chasing her. If anything, she would have preferred that over seeing her sister like this.

This was beyond terrifying because she knew she could lose Lily in a second if she didn’t do everything right.

“Lily!?” She called her sister’s name over and over as she quickly turned off the stove before heading out of the house with her in her arms.

Lily was unconscious, barely breathing. And with each passing minute, it seemed to get worse. Her body was limp and growing colder.

“F*ck,” Selena cursed under her breath as she stood on the sidewalk, trying her best to pull out her phone. Once it was out, she tried to dial 9-1-1, but the device slipped from her hand, hitting the pavement and breaking.

She knew she was losing precious time, and Lily needed every second, so she started shouting for help. “Help!! Somebody help me!!” she cried. “Please!!!” Tears streamed down her face.

Her neighbors soon rushed out of their house and ran toward her. “Oh, sh*t,” the man said, and without needing to be told, he dashed back into his yard toward his car.

His wife hurried over to help Selena with Lily. Selena grabbed the phone off the ground and followed them, trying to get it to work. It finally powered on once they were inside the car.

She called her mom. “It’s Lily,” she said first, her voice shaking. “We’re on our way to the hospital.”

“I’ll be on my way,” her mother replied in a worried tone before hanging up.

Selena lowered the phone and turned back to her sister. Lily was still unconscious, her breathing shallow and fading. Her skin was even starting to turn blue.

“Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t,” Selena muttered as panic took over. Everything she knew to do suddenly vanished from her mind. Her thoughts were blank, her chest tight. “Drive faster!” she shouted at the man behind the wheel.

And he did.

When they arrived at the hospital, they rushed straight to the emergency wing. Nurses immediately took Lily from Selena’s arms and placed her on a stretcher. Selena followed, but before long, someone stopped her and told her she couldn’t go any further.

She stood frozen, watching as they disappeared into a room. She didn’t know what to do, so she just stood there, lost. Then, a gentle hand touched her shoulder.

She turned to see her mother. “She’s going to be fine. This happens every week. She’s going to be fine,” her mother said, almost like she was trying to convince herself.

Tears streamed freely down Selena’s face. She hadn’t even realized she was crying until her mother wiped them away. “Yeah, she’s going to be fine,” Selena whispered back.

Half an hour later, they were in the waiting area with a few others, including their neighbors. It was a very expensive hospital, the same one where Elijah worked.

Selena hoped she’d see him, and with that thought, she kept trying to call him. Her phone screen was cracked, but it still worked.

She suspected she had been blocked because her calls never went through, but that didn’t stop her from trying.

“Selena? Can I talk to you in private for a minute?” her mother asked softly.

Selena nodded, swallowing hard as she put her phone in her pocket and stood. “Sure.” She followed her mother down the hall until they were alone.

“Have you talked to him? Elijah,” her mother asked. “Have you fixed things with him yet? You know I can’t afford anything here. Your sister’s treatment is very expensive.”

Selena forced a small smile. “I have, and he said he would handle it. Don’t worry,” she lied. Her mother was already worried about Lily; she didn’t need to worry about money, too.

Her mother’s face softened in relief. “Are you sure?” she asked, hope filling her eyes.

“Yes, Mom. He’s going to take care of it all as usual.” Selena forced a chuckle.

“Thank the Moon goddess,” her mother said, pulling her into a hug.

Selena hugged her back, tears spilling again. After a few seconds, her mother pulled away. “I’ll be right back, I just need to use the bathroom.”

Selena smiled weakly and nodded before she walked away.

Did she go to the bathroom? No. Did she want to? Yes, but not to use it, only to cry her heart out.

She knew this hospital well, so finding Elijah’s office wasn’t difficult. He was one of the top doctors here. Normally, no one was allowed on that floor without authorization, but everyone knew she was his mate, so no one stopped her.

And the fact that no one did meant Elijah hadn’t yet announced that he planned to reject their bond. Not yet.

That small thought gave her a flicker of hope.

When she reached his office, she saw him through the glass wall, focused on his computer. Still, this was too important to wait.

She knocked on the glass, and when he looked up, his eyes lit up for just a moment before dimming with sadness.

She opened the door and stepped inside. “Elijah…”

“No, you need to leave,” he said as he rose to his feet. “I’m not doing this with you. I’ve already contacted my lawyers. Things will be finalized soon.”

“I’m sorry,” Selena’s voice cracked. “I’m so sorry.” Tears filled her eyes. “I messed up, and I don’t…I don’t know what I’ll do if you leave me.”

“Selena, we’re done. It’s final. There’s no changing my mind.”

She sighed, wiping her tears even though they kept falling. She was about to say something, but a beeping sound suddenly broke the silence.

Elijah pulled something from his pocket and glanced at it. It was his pager. His eyes widened instantly. “Sh*t, it’s Lily!” he shouted, rushing past her and out of the room.

In that very moment, it was like time stood still for the omega.
