Chapter 100. Are You Too Tired to Come Over?
June POV
Mr. Paul’s voice rings over the microphone, crisp and excited, announcing the overall winners of the games played during the three-day retreat. I squeeze Tobias’ hand and glance around at my teammates. We hold each other’s hands, hearts hammering in collective anticipation.
The announcement lands
“For second place– runners-up— Blue team!”
Tobias exhales sharply, disappointment plain on his face. “Oh– we didn’t get first place.”
I jump in quickly, guilt twisting in my chest. “It’s my fault,” I say, voice low. “I wasn’t concentrating properly on the games.”
Tobias shakes his head with a warm smile, “No, it’s fine,” he says. “It’s no one’s fault. We did our best,”
Amaka chips in, “Yeah. We did our best, June. No need for placing blame on each other.”
“Yeah. That’s right.” The other members adds.
