Chapter 189. Guilt
Hermes POV
The stretcher moved too fast.
Metal wheels cutting across tile, white light burning my eyes, June’s body small and fragile beneath the thin hospital sheet. I stayed at the edge of it like if I let go, even for a second, she would disappear again.
June didn’t look at me.
Her eyes were on the desk girl — Kayla. I only knew her name because June had whispered it earlier, like it mattered. The man was there too. Adrian. He hovered too close, holding June’s other hand, speaking softly to her like he had the right.
On any other day, I would have ripped him away from her.
But this wasn’t any other day.
This was the day June was bleeding.
This was the day I learned my father lied.
This was the day I found out our baby had never been gone at all.
Why now?
Why, after three months of hell, after the silence, after the fear, after finally finding her — why did the universe choose this moment to break her again?<
