I never thought I would be the one to suggest visiting our father.
For months, I told myself I was done with him. Done with the disappointment, done with the unanswered questions, done with whatever fragile version of love I had left after everything that came to light about Davis’s father. It had felt final in my mind, like a door that had already closed and locked itself from the inside.
But as Susan and I sat in her living room, the conversation drifting through everything that had happened and everything that was still uncertain about the future, the thought slipped out before I could stop it.
“We should go see him.”
Susan blinked, clearly caught off guard, like she needed a moment to process whether she had heard me correctly. “Who?”
I hesitated only briefly, my fingers tightening around the wine glass as I forced the words to land.
“Dad,” I said quietly. “You’ve never met him, Susan. Not really.”
