I don’t remember driving to Susan’s place. One moment I was standing outside Anderson’s hospital room, my breath coming in short, panicked bursts, everything inside me stretched too thin to hold together, and the next I was gripping the steering wheel in front of her house, my knuckles white, my body moving on instinct alone.
I hadn’t planned this.
I should have gone home.
But home didn’t feel like something I could face right now. It felt empty in a way I couldn’t handle, like it would only make everything louder.
I stepped out of the car slowly, my legs stiff and unsteady, my chest still tight from everything that had just happened, everything I couldn’t fully process yet. My fingers trembled as I reached the door and pressed the doorbell, the sound feeling too sharp in the quiet night.
A few seconds passed.
