The search went on but Lilibeth could not be found. It was as though she had disappeared into thin air.

Going through all that had happened in the past to bring about this predicament, Millicent was sure there were lots of things she would have done differently, chief amongst them was the war that claimed Christopher’s life in the first instance. ‘Why does my daughter have to pay for my crimes?’ she thought unconsolably.

“Take me instead and spare my daughter, she is innocent!” Millicent recalled pleading with Lilibeth but she had laughed.

“If you were the price I wanted, I could have taken you years ago!”

“Why must Iris pay for my mistakes?” Millicent asked. “She is a pure soul. Innocent of all these!”

“Exactly!” Lilibeth said. “I am taking her because she is still innocent and her heart is pure, untainted!”
