Chapter 45
Elias’s POV
I glanced down at the desktop phone beside me and frowned: one of the buttons was cracked, and the little red light beside the handset remained stubbornly unlit. Fantastic. Now I’d have to order a replacement—and sooner rather than later. Picking up a new desk phone wasn’t exactly my idea of fun today.
My eyes drifted to the empty cubicle opposite mine—Maya’s station. Thankfully, she was still off duty and blissfully unaware that her ex-husband had just dialed my office number. Adrian Brooks, that son of a bitch, wanted to speak to me. He had no inkling that my new secretary was his former wife. I should warn her right away. But what if the message distracted her? She’d been deep into her project all morning. Could I risk breaking her concentration and jeopardizing her work? My thumb hovered over the screen, ready to text, when I heard the click of a door handle.
