Chapter 91. Sorrow Captured in a Painting

“No, that gentleman is just a friend of mine. This is my husband”, Jane explained.

Miranda Winston had the grace to feel very embarrassed but quickly composed herself.

“I am sorry. Earlier, I thought your husband was very handsome. I did not expect him to be… uh… such a fine man.”

Miranda Winston saw Ethan in his wheelchair and wanted to offer him some polite praise, but when she noticed his scarred face, her eyes darted away, unable to lie outright.

She had no idea what a beautiful, young lady like Jane saw in her husband. She had thought, at first, that it was probably money. But Jane didn't seem the type.

Well, he may not have had these challenges before they got married, she thought. She liked Jane even more because in today's world, some ladies would have left the marriage.

She caught herself and realized she had not been a good host for leaving them standing at the door.

To relieve the awkwardness, she invited them to tea.
