Chapter 122. Consequences of Arrogance
That afternoon, the New York sky began to darken. Gray clouds rolled over the skyscrapers, a sign of impending rain. A cold wind blew, blowing dry leaves along the sidewalk.
Angeline was still sitting on the sidewalk, leaning against the cold wall of the mall building. Her eyes were swollen, her makeup a mess. Passersby glanced at her with strange looks, but she was too tired to care.
Suddenly, a familiar voice greeted her ears.
“Angeline? Is that you?”
Angeline raised her face, and her eyes immediately met a pair of brown eyes she knew well. Daniel, her former lover, stood before her with a surprised expression.
“Daniel?” Angeline stammered, reflexively trying to tidy up her messy appearance. “What are you doing here?”
Daniel, a man in his early thirties with slightly messy black hair and wearing a rolled-up long-sleeved shirt, looked hesitant. “I just finished a meeting with a potential client around here. But… what happened to you, Angie?”
