Chapter 37
Bonita took a deep breath, trying to compose herself, and replied, “I am Bonita Kenneth, Mrs. Trovica’s daughter.”
Mr. Bevis looked surprised and concerned, realizing that the woman before him was the estranged daughter of the Institute’s director. He had heard about their complicated relationship and the animosity between them.
“I’m sorry for what happened,” Mr. Bevis said with sympathy. “It’s not your fault. Sometimes, these things happen unexpectedly.”
Bonita nodded, but the guilt and regret in her heart remained. She couldn’t help but blame herself for the situation. Despite the resentment she harbored, she had only wanted to tease Mrs. Trovica a bit, not wishing any harm upon her. After all, Mrs. Trovica was still her mother.
As they stood in silence, Mr. Bevis noticed the anxious look in Bonita’s eyes and the pain hidden beneath her cold exterior. He could sense that she was carrying a burden, an emotional turmoil that she didn’t want others to see.
