I pull my battered body off the snowy ground, shaking out my coat. In my wolf form, my vision is much better than normal, but against the storm raging this far up in the mountains, I’m barely able to see more than ten feet in front of me. 

Matilda’s footprints have faded, carried away by the wind, and the trail of vampire blood I’d been following is long gone. 

But I’ve been chasing her for miles… to the outskirts of my family’s kingdom–high in the mountains, where even a shifter would struggle to survive against a storm like this. 

If she’s out here, she won’t be alive for long. If she ever steps foot in my kingdom again, I’ll make an example out of her and string her body on the front gates of the castle for everyone to see and know what I’d do to protect what’s mine. 

The storm batters my back as I make the decision to turn and go home, to where my mate’s awake and waiting for me.
