I pace outside a set of gilded doors that stretch nearly to the domed ceiling somewhere in the depths of the castle. Dressed in a nightgown with a thick, dark purple robe resting over my shoulders, my feet leave imprints in the rug as I walk back and forth, wringing my hands. 

I try to tune out the male voices talking over each other, but it’s impossible. Michael cuts in aggressively, but with the door in the way, his voice is a distorted muffle. Someone else, King Lex, I believe, replies, and Cole’s heated answer sends warning bells skittering through my brain. 

The door suddenly opens and shuts with a slam that rattles the impressive paintings on the red walls as Cole stalks toward me. 

I step out of his way but reach out to him at the very last second, grabbing his wrist. He flinches, giving me a shocked, somewhat furious scowl like he’s not used to being touched.
