Chapter 88. The Weight of Wonder
Lotus’s POV
It takes me ten minutes to make it from my room to the hallway. Not because I’m slow, though I feel like it lately, but because there are guards. Everywhere.
Two at the door, two in the corridor, and one standing outside the elevator like he’s guarding the crown jewels.
All for me. It would be flattering if it weren’t infuriating.
“Really?” I ask, glancing at the nearest one. “Do you all plan to escort me to the clinic like I’m a prisoner or a parade float?”
The youngest guard, barely out of training, flushes bright red. “Alpha Lennox’s orders, Luna. For your protection.”
“From what? The carpet?”
He swallows hard. “Yes, Luna. He is worried you might trip.”
I sigh. “Of course.”
When the elevator doors open, I step inside, or try to. One of the guards insists on going first to “check for threats.” Another follows behind me. The rest stand in front of the doors like I might suddenly bolt for freedom.
