Chapter 4

Aurelia POV

The door snapped shut, leaving me trapped in the dim, stifling quiet of Talia’s cottage.

On the wooden table, Rowan’s portable medical monitor still flickered with low, erratic readings—tracking my elevated heart rate and severe physical exhaustion. My fingers twitched violently at my sides as I paced the length of the narrow room, three paces forward, three paces back.

Outside, the quiet was terrifying.

Hard boots crunched over the gravel paths of the inner ridge. Heavy tactical gear clinked. The sharp, metallic racking of assault rifles cut through the thin mountain air, followed by Ronan barking short, rigid commands to his perimeter guards.

“Shift the heavy enforcers to the ridge! Lock down Grid Four!”

Every sound slammed into my nerve endings like a physical strike.

They were preparing for a siege. Because of me.

I gripped the edge of the wooden window frame, my knuckles turning white. My chest heaved, my breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. Draven had kept me in a cage for months, starving my wolf and poisoning my mind, but now his shadow was stretching across an entire territory. If his enforcers crossed that river, blood would spill on these stones. Innocent blood.

I brought this here, I thought, my throat tight with suffocating guilt. I ran, and I brought the monster right to their door.

A sharp rap sounded on the porch glass. I flinched, pulling back into the shadows as Rowan stepped onto the wooden deck outside, his sidearm strapped tightly to his chest. He didn’t look back at me. He just stood guard, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line, positioning himself between the cottage and the perimeter road.

There was no peace in this room. Only the ticking clock of an impending execution.

A sudden, heavy silence fell over the lower courtyard near the main gate.

Through the wooden slats of the window, I peered down the ridge toward the central courtyard. Thanks to the cottage’s elevation, I had a clear line of sight over the trees, even though the ancient runic stone in the foundation kept the building’s internal magic masked from external scouts.

A tall, lean man stepped out from a dark armored SUV idling near the perimeter barrier. He wore a crisp grey coat over heavy tactical gear, his silver-ringed hands resting casually on his belt.

Corvin. Draven’s chief enforcer and commander of the vanguard.

My stomach dropped into a cold, bottomless abyss. My pulse hammered so violently against my ribs I thought it would burst.

Ronan moved instantly, intercepting Corvin at the courtyard gate with four Redmoon hunters, their rifles raised and aimed directly at Corvin’s chest. Cassian stepped out from the main hall steps, walking slowly down the stone stairs. His broad frame blocked the morning sun, his expression carved from ice.

Corvin didn’t look at Ronan’s rifles. He didn’t even blink. He looked straight past them, his dark, arrogant gaze scanning the high tree line of the upper ridge where the protected cottages sat hidden. A thin, cold smile stretched across his pale face, as if sensing my eyes on him despite the distance.

He reached into his breast pocket. Ronan’s men clicked their safeties off, but Corvin simply pulled out a heavy, blood-red signet ring—Draven’s crest.

Corvin threw the ring onto the dirt at Cassian’s boots. It struck the hard earth with a dull, heavy thud.

“Our Alpha’s terms stand, Cassian,” Corvin spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard via his herald’s amplifier, smooth and laced with absolute malice. “He does not renegotiate. He demands the immediate surrender of his bride.”

Corvin took one slow step forward, his combat boot crushing a fallen pinecone into the mud.

“The hours are ticking away toward sunset,” Corvin added, gesturing toward the southern river line where the rumble of heavy engines echoed in the distance. “The vanguard is in position. If she does not step across that water line before the sun dips below the peak, the next thing crossing won’t be a messenger. We will tear this ridge apart brick by brick until we drag her out.”

The shadows in the room lengthened as the sun dipped toward the jagged mountain peaks.

Outside, the relentless sounds of war preparations echoed off the valley walls—the clatter of ammunition crates, the revving of patrol trucks, the low, tense hum of defensive wards being pushed to their absolute limits.

I stood frozen in the middle of the small room, my hands shaking uncontrollably. Every second felt like a heavy stone crushing my chest. One hour until sunset. One hour until Draven brought his entire army across the river to slaughter everyone who had dared to give me shelter.

Heavy, measured footsteps sounded on the wooden porch outside.

The brass doorknob turned. The heavy oak door swung open, and Cassian stepped inside.

He looked dark, imposing, and exhausted. His tactical vest was strapped tight across his broad chest, his dark hair windblown, his jaw tight with the brutal reality of an impending battle. He brought the cold, sharp scent of mountain air and ozone into the room with him.

He simply closed the door behind him, locking it with a heavy, final click that cut off the noise of the courtyard outside.

He took one slow, deliberate step toward me, his shadow stretching long across the hardwood.

“There is one hour left until sunset,” Cassian said, his eyes locking onto mine with ruthless, unyielding intensity. “And right now, you are going to tell me everything, Aurelia.”
