Nicholas’s touch was soft, far softer than I imagined he could be. His words sounded nice enough, his promise to protect me and all that but I very much doubted I could trust him.

That’s right. He’ll say anything he has to. You’re doing perfectly. Let him have this, look like you’re giving in. He’ll drop his guard. This man will never keep his word, I promise you that.

Paxton’s voice was faint in my head. But I would listen. All I had to do was endure. I’d almost messed everything up earlier when my tongue got away from me and I’d let all my thoughts out. I knew I shouldn’t have done it. Paxton had been so scared for me.
