“Daddy, really… I… I really, really want to come…” I said, letting out a deep sigh. On the other end of the line, I heard my father sigh heavily as well. Even over the phone, his disappointment was palpable.
“Kayleigh Audrey… it’s your mom’s birthday. Really? You’re not coming? You’re not even going to try to make it work?” he asked again, his tone filled with both frustration and concern.
Our call had been going on for nearly five minutes, and this had been the sole topic of discussion—Mom’s upcoming 60th birthday party this Saturday, which I couldn’t attend. I had a meeting scheduled for that day, followed by a convention I absolutely had to attend.
