After Tate hung up, I decided to call Mom. I was confident she’d be awake and able to answer since she usually started her day as early as 5 AM. Sometimes, she even beat the sound of Dad’s roosters crowing in the yard.

Whenever she woke up, her face would naturally scrunch like she was half-asleep, giving her an almost chinky-eyed look, even though she wasn’t really. It was the kind of expression that could make you wonder if she’d cried the night before, with how puffy her eyes seemed.
