After Auntie left, I carefully opened the door and grabbed the food she had brought fast. I made sure that she wouldn’t see me because ‘I have sore eyes and I did not want her to become infected with it too.’
The food was still warm—its smell wafting up and momentarily making my stomach grumble despite the overwhelming heaviness I felt. I carried it to the dining table and sat down, staring at the neatly packed tupperware. For a moment, I hesitated. The thought of eating anything felt daunting, but I forced myself to take a bite, reasoning that I had to at least try. I haven’t eaten anything yet since last night, so I really need to eat.
I managed to eat about a quarter of the content of the tupperware, each bite slow and deliberate.
