Chapter 5. The Perfect Candidate

Harold's POV

“You know the drill, it has to be someone with no knowledge about us, their heritage and void of any scandals. Someone who can go missing and no one would really ask questions.” Alpha Ethan had said to me as I told him that we needed a house manager.

The previous one, though human, had been an old woman, and she had started to lose her mind with age. Luma had been with the boys from their toddler stage up until now, but sadly, last week, she passed on.

She had been buried secretly yet respectfully, and now, without any house manager, they had made a nuisance of the homestead. I had to approach the Alpha with the same talk yet again: we needed to get a replacement as soon as possible.

“Just grant me permission to go scout for the right person, and I promise, I shall fetch someone suitable,” I promised him.

“Oh, Harold. I know you would do exceptionally well, but do not forget these boys are in their prime. Their display of youthful exuberance alongside mischief is no news to you. We cannot bring another woman around them now, especially as they are yet to find mates.” Luna Tamera entered the room now.

“My Luna is right. A werewolf unhinged at this point is really a dangerous beast to tame. I'd better be managing the whores they bring in here than have them getting a servant pregnant or something.” The Alpha said to me.

“I understand, my Alpha,” I responded with a bow.

They did have a point, as Damon, amongst the four, was the worst of the lot with his constant hanging around bitches he picks around randomly.

Eventually, I got the blessing of both the Alpha and the Luna to go scout for someone suitable for this role.

I took a drive out and knew exactly where to go in search and who to ask.

There were a lot of places to find people, but the best places for random people to hide or disguise themselves were the clubs and other bits of the underworld where people engaged in illegal activities.

I had initially gone out to see an old pal of mine who was aided by information.

“Old friend.” I greeted Jackson.

“Harold.” He said as he came to shake my hand.

“So, what do you have for me?” I demanded.

“The boys in my keep are nothing like what you need. For lads like mine, it's definitely security.” He said to me,

I laughed inwardly. All the years I had known Jackson, he had no idea that I was a werewolf or that we even existed. The thought of hiring a human as protectors to werewolves was amusing, as I could not even begin to imagine it. Nevertheless, I had to retain rapport.

“So, what do you suggest?” I asked him.

“If you need a boy who can take that role, which actually seems to me as a woman's job, then you need to go seek out those sissies down at the club en route to Diego's. You'll see them grinding to poles and acting all feminine. Disgusting lot, but at least they should serve your duties.” He said as he spat out the words.

Clearly, he was no fan of theirs, as he was of the world where men should be strong with a woman under them.

“Thank you, old friend,” I said and wore my hat as I started back to my car.

“You wouldn't stay for a drink? Been a long time, pal.” He said to me,

I smiled at him with a bit of encouragement.

“This time I come for my master. Perhaps next time, we might share that drink.” I said to him,

“I see. A man on a mission. Okay. I shall await that drink, but hold fast to your wallet in there; those lots are pickpockets.” He said to me,

I tapped the tip of my hat as I started back to the car.

I had made my way straight to where he had directed me. There indeed was a club in the area with the inscription:

'CLUB DEHOUSE'

The moment I entered, I could see what Jackson had been up and about. It was crowded with more men than women, but I tried to blind my eyes to everything they were doing as I sought the person I needed.

I went and took a seat by the bar as I observed everyone in the place. A lot of them were either too scandalous-looking or too noisy to bring back to the house. I needed someone quiet and had finally settled for a guy who was dancing on a man's lap. He did not seem to know what he was doing, but I believed that he might at least be of use, even though I disapproved of him.

“Hey, bar boy, I need my drink!” I heard a man yell from across the room and turned my gaze in his direction.

That was when I saw him. The softest lad with so much innocence and naivety written all over his face. He seemed calm and collected as he attended to the customers.

I decided to delete the picture I had taken of the dancer earlier, as I took his pictures instead, and sent them off to the security team.

They were on standby to find out things for me, and I patiently waited until I got their feedback.

He was a wanted fugitive. I was alarmed. How could someone so innocent be a fugitive, and I had already deleted the other guy's photo.

That was when I caught sight of the name of the person he was wanted for his murder.

'Dr Diddy'

I knew of him and heard how a patient had tragically killed him. He had been an abuser, but seemed so clever. Since we could not interfere with their things, there was nothing I could do.

But seeing the boy whose file name read 'Jace', I knew if anything had brought him close to Dr Diddy, it was clear he had been nothing but a victim.

I was curious as I watched how efficiently he handled his job. He had already won my admiration when I took off my hat and approached him.

I had eventually left him my card, even though he seemed unsure of leaving his job, but something gnawed at the back of my mind. He was definitely going to call back.

I drove away back home as I climbed into my bed.

It was something quiet deep into the night that my phone rang. I knew it was him because I had bought this SIM for this purpose, and so far, he alone had my contact.

I took his call and reassured him when he apologized that, indeed, I knew he would call.

It was settled then, I went first to inform Alpha Ethan at his home, before I would go pick him up, that I had found the perfect candidate.

“A stray.” He said as he looked through the file.

“Yes, and even if he goes missing, it would be all good to the cops. He will not be missed at all.” I said to him,

“That's a nice find, Harold. I just hope those savages do not torment him.” The Alpha said.

“I'm sure they wouldn't bother with him since he's a man. I really believe so, my Alpha.” I said to him,

“Have you informed them?” He asked.

“Not yet. I know if I told them, they would strongly kick against it. But if he's brought suddenly, they would have no other choice but to accept the decision.” I said.

“That is really smart of you, Harold. I shall be coming later to meet with the lad in their home. Get them all set for a meeting, but in the meantime, go fetch the lad.” He said to me,

I bowed respectfully and drove away to the lad's workplace. I had informed him and hoped he would be ready to leave.

However, as I arrived, he asked for time so his employer could arrive. There was no time for all of that, as right now, no people were walking around.

I could not be spotted taking him away. Hence, I refused on the grounds that he had to leave now. He did not understand the need for the hurry, but eventually agreed with me as he locked the doors and got in the car with me.

I started out on a road that was barely used soon and he became uneasy despite wanting to call his now former employer.

He was distracted by the need to know where he was going. I knew it was fear, but beneath that fear, I could see years and years of abuse built into trauma clinging to him.

He did not trust me, especially with the fact that I was a man.

Something gnawed at the back of my neck. If indeed he had been abused, how was he going to cope with the mischievous four who were in men's?

Was he going to trust that no one would ever molest him?
