Chapter 127
Mara’s POV
The woman Ronan had heard was still at her post. Her voice traveled through the floor as if she stood beside us: her shift had ended, and she wanted to go home. The House offered her the choice to stay, to arrange a replacement, or to go. She asked for a replacement, waited for one to arrive, and left. No Alpha declared her responsible enough to deserve freedom. The route simply ceased holding her.
Then the replies came faster. A healer in Redwater wanted to keep a shared emergency link with her team, provided each person could leave it at any time. A Frostmere patrol refused an inherited command to hold a mountain road in dangerous weather. In Ashfall, two guards argued over whether a ward should remain around a nursery. The House waited while they argued. I felt how much that delay frightened the part of the system built to prevent harm before anyone could disagree.
