Chapter 44
Mara's POV
Vivian wouldn't let go of Maeve's hand. I could hardly blame her. A strange red circle had appeared beneath her skin, and for several long breaths she had been afraid her child was dying.
The baby kicked again. Vivian cried with relief, then looked embarrassed. Maeve told her she was permitted to cry in her own infirmary.
I stood at the foot of the bed. Months ago Vivian had held a cup of medicine while I trusted her. I remembered the taste of it and the years I had spent wondering why my body wouldn't give me a child. I also saw a frightened woman trying to protect hers. Neither sight canceled the other.
“Would you rather I leave?” I asked.
“No.” Vivian wiped her face. “Please stay until your mother comes.”
