Mara's POV

My mother waited until we were behind a locked door before telling me the part she had omitted.

I was becoming familiar with that pattern.

"Start with why the Custodians knew you," I said.

Elara sat across from me in Ronan's old archive. Soren occupied the table beside her with four founder texts. Ronan stood near the door, arms folded, visibly resisting the urge to interrogate everyone at once.

Elara admitted that she and Alden had once asked the Custodians for help after discovering the Vale oath could be used as a relay. The Custodians answered by trying to kill Alden and place Elara in permanent custody.
