Chapter 11. Dangerous
Eva came back from her trip carrying a bag of terrible gas-station candy for Diana.
She took one look at Diana’s face and steered her straight into the supply closet.
“Talk.”
“Here?”
“It has a door and no Helena. Talk.”
So Diana talked. She told Eva about the diner and the pitch, the napkin with her number on it, Mrs. Lu and the spicy wontons, and the argument about April. She told her about the matchbook on wet asphalt and the warehouse on the docks. And she told her about Maya, who had shared the shifts across from Diana’s building with Ruth all weekend in a gray hatchback, eating sunflower seeds and looking deeply unimpressed with the world.
Then Diana told her about the folded paper on her couch, the word she had heard, and what Gabriel had said he was.
Eva did not move. “A werewolf???”
"I know how it sounds—"
"Like a middle-school Twilight phase? Yeah, absolutely… So did you see him turning?"
