Chapter 17. The Pink Dress

On the flight, Diana asked until she ran out of questions. She learned that Cecil, Gabriel’s business partner in Shanghai, was a wolf, his wife Elaine was human, and Maya and Ruth knew exactly what they were protecting her from. Charles offered to introduce her to Elaine if she wanted somebody else to talk to.

“Someone who disagrees with you,” Diana told Gabriel.

“You’ll like her,” Charles said.

Gabriel gave him a look. Diana almost laughed.

Later, with the cabin dimmed, she woke beneath a blanket. Gabriel sat opposite her, reading. He had taken off his shoes. One sock had a hole near the heel.

She stared until he looked up.

“Don’t,” he said.

“I haven’t said anything.”

“Your face has.”

The laugh escaped before she could stop it. He stayed in his seat while she put her feet on the empty cushion beside him. After a moment, his hand came to rest near her ankle. She moved her foot the last inch.
