Chapter 76. The Word On The Page

On Monday, Diana sat across from Dr. Morgan and waited for a sentence she had already heard herself say.

Gabriel was beside her. This time, he had not brought a separate list of questions. He had asked to read hers over breakfast, added two, and handed the notebook back.

The doctor went through the results and the information they had brought. Then she looked up.

“Yes, Diana. You're pregnant.”

The words were ordinary in her voice.

Diana looked down at the notebook. A line she had drawn beneath an appointment time seemed suddenly more real than anything else on the page.

Beside her, Gabriel let out a breath.

She turned toward him. He was looking at the doctor, his mouth slightly open, as though he had prepared himself for every answer except the one they wanted.
