Jhoanna's POV

It started with a shriek that sent my heart leaping into my throat.

“MAMA! MAMA! MAMAAAAAA!”

I dropped the laundry basket right there in the hallway and sprinted into the living room, already imagining blood, broken bones, or some kind of apocalyptic disaster involving magic gone wrong. But instead, I found my daughter standing in the center of the room with her mouth wide open and a tiny white tooth cupped delicately in her hand.

“It came out!” she cried, grinning proudly. Her voice trembled with excitement. “My first tooth, Mama!”

I exhaled, placing a hand over my wildly beating heart. “Lily, sweetie, you scared me half to death.”

“But look!” she held it up like it was treasure, eyes sparkling. “The Tooth Fairy is going to come tonight!
