When we arrived home that same day, I was surprised to find my mother, despite being uncertain and sad, had prepared a cake to celebrate my freedom. And even though I was no longer a clean-slate Korean citizen, I didn’t feel sad or afraid anymore. I had protected my love and was by my family’s side. We ate the cake, and the house regained its peculiar noise.
When the lawyer visited us the following week, I finally received instructions for my new job and wanted to start it alone, asking Harin to stay home to avoid attracting too much attention, especially while all the confusion surrounding me hadn’t yet exploded.
So I drove to Dongdaemun and easily found the Gwangeo Bum orphanage. It looked good, maybe I had been expecting something bad, considering it wasn’t a wealthy neighborhood in the city.
