Chapter 54

God, I said stuff about his dead parents, what was wrong with me? I wished the ground would open up and swallow me.

We soon pulled into my father’s house and Joseph drove into the driveway. We stepped out and got into the house to see Catherine standing in front of the door. She smiled at Joseph and smiled at me but I treated her to a dirty look. She didn’t seem to take notice and walked us into the house.

“How’s my father doing? Is he improving?” I asked. I was very scared and Joseph had a very sober look on his face. I had lost my mom and I wasn’t ready to lose my dad. God help me. I need you right now.

“He isn’t getting better. I wish I could say he was getting better, but there’s no improvement. I think that’s why he wanted to see you.” She turned to look at me. “your father doesn’t have much time left.”

My heart crashed like an airplane that lost its engines mid-flight. How much more was I going to suffer? How much more did life have in store for me?
