Daniel’s POV
My office felt like a cage, the walls pressing in as I stared at the papers on my desk, the bones of a deal now picked clean by Hammond’s.
Losing that client had bitten deep, a nasty wound in my pride. My mind kept replaying the argument with Evan earlier, a sour taste in my mouth; just when I thought things were settling, the past always found a way to claw its way back.
I pushed the documents away, rubbing my temples; I desperately needed a win, something to shake off this bitter taste of defeat.
A knock, soft but firm, sounded at my door. “Come in,” I called out, not looking up.
Ellie stepped in, her usual sharp business clothes somehow looking even sharper today; she always had a way of looking ready for battle, even when just walking into my office.
She carried a tablet in one hand, her eyes already fixed on me, calculating. “Got something for you,” she announced, her voice brisk, cutting through my thoughts.
