The second the office door clicked after we walked inside, after Giovanni left, I felt something inside me break. I felt like the whole world under me crumbled, and like I was smaller than I ever was.
I didn’t care that Damon was there. I didn’t care that we were still at work, or that the walls might have ears. I turned away from him, pressing a hand against the desk to steady myself, because if I didn’t, I was sure my legs would give out.
I knew that they would no longer support me, and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to straight. No matter how hard I was going to try, this was far too painful for me to be able to handle.

The one who haunted my nightmares, who left shadows in every corner of my life.
And he had the nerve to show up today, to walk in like he hadn’t shattered everything I had ever known.
“Are you okay?” Damon’s voice was quiet, careful. Like he didn’t want to startle me.
