The second the office door clicked after we walked inside, after Giovanni left, I felt something inside me break. I felt like the whole world under me crumbled, and like I was smaller than I ever was.

I didn’t care that Damon was there. I didn’t care that we were still at work, or that the walls might have ears. I turned away from him, pressing a hand against the desk to steady myself, because if I didn’t, I was sure my legs would give out.

I knew that they would no longer support me, and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to straighten things out. No matter how hard I tried, this was far too painful for me to handle.
