I wrapped my arm around Sienna, pulling her to my chest, feeling her racing heartbeat, her fear, and her pain.
And though I didn’t speak, I felt it too.
That pull in the air. That twisting silence. The kind of quiet that didn’t belong in this world. A mist that smelled of lavender and rot crept down the hall just seconds before it vanished, and I ran.
“Are you okay?” I whispered, and she shook her head.
“How could she be here? Of all people, how could she be here?” She asked, lowering her voice to above a whisper. I frowned as I looked at her, trying to understand what it was that she was talking about, who she was referring to. But the fear in her eyes told me that something bad must have happened. Else she wouldn’t be as scared.
Delilah stood by the window, her back pressed to the wall like she was trying not to collapse. Like she was trying to contain herself, try to understand what was going on.
