The sun filtered softly through the window as I sat by the edge of the crib, watching Isla’s tiny chest rise and fall. Her fingers curled around the edge of the blanket, her lips twitching now and then as she dreamed. Peaceful. Innocent.
I envied her for it.
I was sitting with the conflict that I had chosen to accept the job offer for her, Damon’s request, but I had not denied it yet. I did not reject it. I couldn’t bring myself to do so. I couldn’t bring myself to just leave something that I wanted, not after everything that I had endured, not after everything that they made me go through.
I knew that I wouldn’t be able to cope with this being alone here. I was going to need to fight back; I was going to need something to sustain myself, but I needed to do it more smartly. Damon was right; Giovanni and Lysa
