Chapter 36. Confusion

Avery’s POV

I stared at him in disbelief, rubbing my sore wrists as the bindings fell away. “Why are you doing this?” I asked, unable to hide my confusion.

He shook his head.

“Because I am not your enemy and I do not intend to hurt you.” He replied.

He lowered himself into a squat so we were face-to-face.

“I will not hurt you, you have my word.” He told me. “You’ll be fine, I promise.”

I sat motionless on the edge of the bed, my body trembling from exhaustion and confusion. The room I found myself in was dimly lit, the soft glow of a single lamp casting shadows across the wooden walls.

The faint hum of voices outside the door was a sharp reminder that I was still a prisoner regardless
