Chapter 66
Maeve’s POV
I was rooted to the spot. I couldn’t move a muscle, not even to whisper. It felt as if time itself had frozen, suspending every motion around me. My gaze stayed locked on Aria’s wolf as it was mauled by the enemy pack’s leader. Claws raked along her neck, tearing flesh; her blood poured out, soaking into the earth until her form lay utterly still.
A strangled gasp escaped me, and my chest throbbed painfully. My legs wobbled as though they might give way beneath me, my feet threatening to collapse into that blood-slicked ground. Still, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Aria’s wolf. She was… she was dead. Aria was dead.
Gradually, the world snapped back into motion. Growls erupted all around—wolves snarling, battling each other. Even with the witches’ desperate spells bolstering our side, we were hopelessly surrounded. I heard ragged, dying breaths echoing in my ears as dozens of eyes searched the shadows.
