I shudder. I don’t want to think about any of that right now. I just want to rejoice that Marcus is a free man. That he is no longer in danger. That he’s mine.
Marcus sits next to me and puts my feet in his lap. I’ve taken off my shoes, but I’m still wearing the skirt I wore this morning, and I close my eyes to enjoy the feel of his fingers caressing my calf.
“I’m so sorry,” I say.
“The fact that—?”
Opening my eyes, I see him smiling at me with such a tender expression that it almost breaks my heart.
“To be so sad. We should be buying confetti and throwing it off rooftops.”
“I’m sure that goes against some municipal regulation. I’d hate to get pulled over,” he says, raising a mischievous eyebrow.
I laugh.
“Seriously, go on. You can be happy for me and sad for your father. Or confused, or whatever,” he adds quickly, seeing in my face that I have mixed feelings about my father.
