“Do you understand?”
I nod, though I’m not entirely sure. In a showdown between Marcus and Nick over whether I keep my job, I don’t see how Nick wouldn’t have the last word. He is, after all, my boss.
The unpleasant thought occurs to me that since Marcus is Jeremiah Dermont’s son, he probably knows things Nick would want kept secret. Which means it’s possible Marcus knows them, too.
But the thought of Marcus blackmailing Nick for me is so repulsive that I shove it away. He hasn’t said that, and I’m just spinning out. And the truth is, Marcus doesn’t know Nick at all.
“Your brother isn’t such a bad person, you know?”
“Maybe yes, maybe not. Right now I don’t care about Nick or the resort. The only thing that matters to me is you. All I want is you. Tell me I haven’t screwed up. Tell me I haven’t lost you.”
“How could you lose me when we just found each other again?”
