“I didn’t really know, Ash. I swear.”
I was quiet. Yet it’s not because I’m mad about what happened. I believe Lyle. We’re the first ones who called the restaurant. It can’t be possible that Lyle was informed of the next person who asked for the reservation. If the person informing Lyle and the one informing Dylan’s the same, it should be the second person who should be aware of the offer, not the first one.
“It’s okay, Lyle. I understand.”
“You believe me?”
I nodded. I have no energy for anything else today. I do not have the mindset and the heart for a gut-wrenching conversation, too. It’s always simpler to understand.
“I do, Lyle. Let’s drop the topic.”
Lyle gave me a long stare and then dropped it. He focused on what was in front of the steering wheel. Looked ahead. Exactly what I’m supposed to be doing now. Looking ahead, not at what’s in the rear.
Exactly like that.
But I cannot let it go. Dylan has a girlfriend now
