Chapter 49
We left the hospital after the doctor prescribed medicine for Daisy. His words still lingered, his desperate plea for us not to file a complaint. He kept blaming the nurse, saying it was her mistake, that he only found out when it was too late. But what good are excuses now? The damage was done.
Benjamin opened the car door gently, and Daisy climbed into the back seat. He closed it softly, almost as if afraid the sound would disturb her, and then walked around to the driver’s side. I slid into the passenger seat.
The drive back to the hotel was wrapped in silence. The city lights streaked past the window. Daisy leaned her head against the seat, clutching the small paper bag that held her medicine. I glanced back at her from time to time, but she seemed lost in her own little world.
I folded my hands in my lap, pressing my fingers into my palms, trying to ground myself. My heart hadn’t slowed since the hospital. Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the doctor’s word
