Chapter 1

Laura’s POV

I cringed at the vulgar noises coming from the stall next to me. Students always found a way to pull off these idiotic stunts, even during the first period.

“Damn it!” The girl moaned, and I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the strangely familiar voice.

Whoever was in there was going at it without holding back. I bet she had a hard time getting through the rest of the day. Deciding it was none of my business, I started to leave, but the next set of explicit words that escaped the girl’s lips froze me in place. Time stood still as I processed what I had just heard.

“Oh my God! Lucas, right there! Harder, Lucas!”

Lucas? Did she… did she just call Lucas?

I spun around, my heart pounding in my chest, as I stared at the door. My breath slowly became shallow as the feeling of betrayal began to seep inside of me.

It couldn’t be true, could it?

Shaking my head, I stopped myself from going any further.

I was about to scream, but I quickly covered my mouth, still fixated on the door.

I could recognize that voice anywhere, at any time of day. It had always been in my head, and now I was listening to it having sex with someone else? In there?

Lucas, my boyfriend, the person I loved so deeply, was having sex with another girl in there.

That bastard was cheating on me!

“You’re so damn loud! Can you keep it down for a few minutes?”

I felt as if the world was spinning around me as I tried to suppress the scream that threatened to escape from my lips, my eyes still locked on the door.

Although her voice had returned to normal, I couldn’t quite place where I had heard it before.

“I don’t know if I can make it through the day. You’ve left me completely drained, Lucas.”

The girl hissed, and now that it was her natural voice, not the high-pitched one she was using before, it sounded eerily familiar, yet I couldn’t quite place it.

“Let’s get out of here before someone catches us,” he suggested.

“Are you afraid your little girlfriend will find out about us?”

He chuckled without a hint of remorse for what he had just done. “She knows better than to think I’d be faithful to her.”

“Good girls always hope they can change bad boys into good men. She’s no exception.”

She laughed, and I felt an overwhelming urge to drown her in the nearest toilet so she could never speak again.

“Don’t talk about her like that. She’s changing me, believe it or not.”

“Says the guy who’s been fucking me all along. It amazes me how blind she is.”

“It’s called love, baby. My girlfriend loves me unconditionally.”

They both laughed, and I watched as the door opened, their laughter abruptly stopping when they locked eyes with me.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I gazed into Lucas’s widened eyes. He looked like a thief caught in the act.

Quinn didn’t say a word. She only stared at Lucas, who had yet to take his eyes off me.

“I’ll let you two sort things out,” she said with a slight smile. She leaned up and kissed Lucas on the cheek. If anything could ignite my anger, that kiss would be it.

“That was great, babe. I’ll see you later.”

She gave me one final mocking smile before exiting the room, and my gaze finally settled on the despicable person I thought was the love of my life. How foolish could I have been?

I should have rejected this scoundrel’s proposal the moment it was presented to me, but what did a naïve me do? I accepted it, foolishly believing that he loved me. Oh, how mistaken I was.

“Laura, I…”

He began to beg, but I shook my head, raising my hand to silence him from speaking further.

“Laura, please, let me…”

“Save it. I don’t want to hear a word. How long has this been going on? How long have you been seeing her behind my back?”

Guilt crossed his face, and he averted his gaze, suddenly finding interest in his fingernails.

“For a month.”

My boyfriend had been cheating on me for an entire month, right under my nose, with a girl I thought was my friend. And I never even suspected it.

“How could you, Lucas?”

“I’m sorry, Laura. I never intended for it to come to this. I promise you she’s the only one. The only one I’ve ever cheated on you with. I didn’t touch another girl during the early months of our relationship, I swear to God. I love you, Laura.”

His words ignited something within me, and before I could control myself, my palm connected with his cheek. I watched as his eyes widened, his hand instinctively reaching to soothe the stinging impact. I never expected to do something like that, but I wouldn’t take it back.

He snapped his gaze back at me, and the fire burning in his eyes made me recoil. He sneered and took a long stride, closing the distance between us, and grabbed me forcefully.

“Don’t you dare touch me! Let me go, you bastard!”

I struggled against his hold, but he grabbed my neck, tightening his grip as he slammed my back against the wall to restrain me.

He chuckled and then said, “You’re pathetic, Laura. Truly. I never thought you would believe all those words I said, but you did. It only shows how much of a pathetic person you really are. Did you seriously believe that I cared about you? That I was stupidly in love with you?”

He laughed, each word feeling like a dagger piercing my already wounded heart.

“I did. Because you made me believe it,” I responded.

“There are plenty of hotter girls out there, Laura. You don’t even come close to my standards,” he laughed, his eyes leering down my body, and I regretted every moment I allowed this despicable person to touch me.

“Why did you do all those things, then? If you never meant any of it? Was it all just a game? To toy with me and my emotions?”

“Because of your brother, you ignorant fool! What other reason would I have to be with you? I only wanted to be friends with your damn brother, and that didn’t work out either, did it?”

“You’re a wretched bastard. You should be ashamed of yourself!” I spat out the words, and he laughed, shrugging nonchalantly as his grip on my neck tightened.

“What can I say? I was just good at what I did. But it was satisfying, you know. Being the first one to have you. I took your virginity.”

He laughed, seemingly proud of himself. While I believed this scumbag was the right person to share that intimate moment with, he was only concerned about building a reputation for himself.

“Say hello to your brother for me. Let him know how much I learned from him, too. After all, he was the biggest player. I’ll see you around, girlfriend.”
