The conference hall was empty now, the long glass table still littered with tablets, documents, and half-finished cups of coffee.

I remained seated, elbows resting on the table, fingers pressed to my temples.

My mind was still on the bed I’d left before dawn. On tangled sheets. On Charlotte’s warm body curled against mine, breathing softly, trusting me enough to sleep like nothing in the world could hurt her.

I woke up and left her all alone.
