It was dark already, in the coven and outside. Most of the witches had gone to sleep, but Merga remained awake. Her mind was tumultuous, like a troubled sea. If she was right, the father of the man she was falling in love with was the same person that had killed her mother. She played the scene over and over in her head, for she had been there. She had seen her mother fall to her knees, her hands raised in a plea. The man who had killed her was garbed in full army regalia, and she had noticed that there was a royal touch to his clothes. She also remembered, even though faintly, him giving orders to other soldiers, so she must have thought he was a general or just another high ranking officer. Could he have been the king, Robert's father?
She knew immediately that she had to see Robert, not just to confirm that it was his father who had killed her mother, but also to warn him of an impending attack from the witches. Mother Eleanor had placed a ban on her from ever leaving
