‘What the hell is going on?’ I demand in the mind-link. It’s the first time I’ve been able to speak to my Beta in weeks.

It’s been a long trip back from the Winter Realm. I was hoping our first sight of land would bring relief. Instead, a rage of panic is building in me. We’re not close enough to see whether the smoke is coming from the castle or somewhere in the city.

Either way, that bastard Assanan is going to pay.

‘They barreled through our defenses like Titans,’ Turgan replies.

I don’t need any explanation to know who ‘they’ are.

‘The north end of the city is in flames,’ he continues. ‘We evacuated all residents into the safe zone before the invasion began, so there are no civilian casualties.’
