I will never grow accustomed to saying farewell to an Oceana warrior. I hate to admit that I did not know them all personally. It’s impossible, given the immense size of our army. But each one has been hand-selected, if not by me then by Turgan or one of my many trusted generals, and all are more precious than the finest gemstone, as far as I am concerned.

We lost few in this last battle, thanks in large part to the dedication of our healers and their staff, who worked tirelessly to heal each warrior brought to their care. Elara personally accompanied us on this journey, along with her assistant healers and staff. I can’t pretend I didn’t beg her to come, not only to care for our people, but also to watch over Lyra and our growing baby inside her, terrified that repeated use of the amulet would harm one or both of them.
