Elena’s breath caught as she slipped over the edge. Her heart jolted, racing as the sky drifted farther and farther away and the ground rushed terrifyingly closer.
Erika screamed, stumbling backward from the railing, tripping over her own feet and crashing to the floor. Her eyes were wide with shock, her heart pounding with fear. At the sound of her voice, the entire crowd at the gate fell silent. The Eldrians watched their queen‑to‑be plummet toward the ground.
Elena shut her eyes, knocked unconscious by fear alone. To her, there was nothing left to do. Nothing that could save her now—not Arthur, not Annalyn. Between her and certain death lay only the promise of a broken neck.
