“What are you doing here?” His voice was almost gentle, hesitant, as if he was afraid she might vanish like an illusion. “How have you been?”
And then—that smile.
That infuriating, familiar smile, as if he actually cared. As if he hadn’t ripped her heart out and left her to bleed.
Jessica swallowed, forcing herself to remain composed.
“I’m fine,” she replied, her voice devoid of warmth. “I just came to see my doctor, but he’s not around, so I was leaving.”
Her eyes flickered toward the pregnant woman standing beside him. Young. Beautiful. Glowing.
Happy.
Jessica’s chest tightened, her emotions threatening to spill over, but she kept her expression cold. She refused to let him see how much this was affecting her.
Matthew studied her carefully. “Are you sick?”
She inhaled sharply, hating the concern laced in his voice. Like he had the right to care.
“I’m fine,” she muttered, then turned on her heel and walked away.
