As I make Alyssa a breakfast smoothie, I carefully measure the liquid prenatal vitamin I’ve been giving her all week. I steady my hand as I pour it into the blender, making sure I don’t spill a single drop. Our girl needs all the nutrients she can get.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Mason’s voice nearly startles the shit out of me, and I almost knock over the bottle.

“Shit, Mace! Don’t sneak up on me like that, you asshole!” I hiss, placing a hand over my thumping heart.

He picks up the bottle, reading the label with a raised brow. “Since it looked like you were sneaking contraband or some shit, I take it Alyssa doesn’t know about this.”

I glance towards the stairs, lowering my voice. “No, she doesn’t. And she doesn’t need to right now. You’re the one who told us the first trimester’s the most important, and we need to make sure they both stay healthy.”
