Chapter 5

As I turned to look at the woman that Anthony was pointing at, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was staring at the woman who broke my heart when I was still a boy. I was staring at the woman who I thought was the one! I was staring at the woman who I thought was my one true love! Now that I was steadily establishing myself as the king of the underground world where blood, crimes, and sin are my everyday meals, she shows up like the ray of sunshine that she is and expects me to take her back.

“Hello, Nick!” Sasha’s voice was fierce. It hit the ground like lightning. “Did you miss me?”

My mind was racing. I couldn’t believe that Sasha was standing right in front of me. After all these years, I had thought that I had moved on from her. But as I looked at her, all those feelings of hurt and betrayal came flooding back.

I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself. “Sasha,” I said, my voice low and measured. “What are you doing here?”
