Chapter 123. Hiding in the Basement

I crouched behind a stack of covered furniture, my heart pounding in my chest. How had they gotten down here so quickly? And why would Elder Robert want to be in the basement? 

I strained my ears, trying to make out what they were saying. It was not like I wanted to be nosey or anything, I just wanted to know what they were talking about so I could better protect myself. 

Hearing what they were saying could help me to know what part of the basement they were heading to, and that way, I could avoid being there and hide somewhere else. 

“Are you sure that you have this place protected?” Elder Robert’s voice was coming in stronger than before. They must have been at the door. 

“Yes, Robert. Don’t you see the electronic padded lock? You know we have to keep down here protected,” Alan replied, and then I heard a beep, signaling that the door to the basement was now unlocked. 

My heart thumped in my chest even harder and I tried my best to b
