The ribbon still burned against Mara’s wrist days later.
Not physically — though the knot bit deep, leaving faint red lines on her skin — but in her mind. It was there constantly, like a pulse, a brand, a leash she carried everywhere she went.
Every glance from a stranger felt dangerous now. Every casual conversation hummed with risk. The world outside had shrunk into a stage where she performed her obedience, while he waited in the wings, ready to strike at the slightest slip.
But something else had crept in, too.
Another shadow.
The first time, she thought it was paranoia. That she was being paranoid. A flicker in her peripheral vision while she walked home. A man-shaped silhouette in the alley across from her building. She told herself it was nothing. "Don't overthink it", she told herself. "You now see watchers everywhere because of your stalker lover".
