“Stay back,” she whispered, her voice brittle.
He tilted his head, watching her like a predator would study prey before striking. Then, slowly, he lifted both hands in a mock gesture of surrender.
“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said, his tone steady, coaxing. “I’m here to save you.”
Mara’s breath hitched. That was the same phrase the other one had used, the one who had owned her, chained her, consumed her until she thought she would vanish inside him.
