Mara’s grip on the lamp tightened until her knuckles ached. The man in the doorway stood so calmly, as if he’d walked into his own home. His frame filled the space, shadows cutting across his sharp jaw. His eyes gleamed with something that wasn’t relief.

“Stay back,” she whispered, her voice brittle.

He tilted his head, watching her like a predator would study prey before striking. Then, slowly, he lifted both hands in a mock gesture of surrender.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said, his tone steady, coaxing. “I’m here to save you.”

Mara’s breath hitched. That was the same phrase the other one had used, the one who had owned her, chained her, consumed her until she thought she would vanish inside him.

Mine. I’m saving you.

Now this one used the same words, but softer. Almost tender.

“Don’t you recognize me?” he asked, stepping closer.

She raised the lamp higher. “Stay back!”

He stopped, though the smirk tugging at his lips said he could
